Sermon Questions

ENGAGE

READ

  • Read or summarize Genesis 15
  • Share any observations or questions from the passage or the sermon.

REFLECT

  • Looking at Abram's current circumstances (no heir, living as a nomad, recent conflict with kings), what fears do you think he was battling? How does God reassure him? Read Luke 1:13, 30, Psalm 3:3 and Hebrews 11:6. Why is God’s Word so reassuring?
  • What is the difference between asking God questions and questioning God? How does God respond to Abram’s questions? How does God show His intimacy and gentleness in His response to Abram?
  • How does the ratification of the covenant display God’s condescension to Abram? Why is this important? What is the significance of God walking through the pieces alone while Abram sleeps?

RESPOND

  • What does it mean for righteousness to be "credited" rather than earned? How does this lay the groundwork for the Christian understanding of salvation? According to Romans 4:23–25, how does Abram’s experience of being credited with righteousness directly apply to us today as Christians?
  • “Know for certain…”How do you think Abram felt hearing that the fulfillment of the promise would take centuries and involve suffering for his future family? What do we “know for certain”? How does this encourage us?
