ENGAGE
- What is your most treasured possession?
READ
- Read or summarize the passage (Mark 10:17-34).
- Share any observations or questions from the passage or the sermon.
REFLECT AND RESPOND
- What do we learn about the man in verses 17, 20, and 22? What did he mean “inherit eternal life”? (10:17) How does the Bible define it? What are your impressions of this rich man who approaches Jesus? How does he compare to the children in verses 13-16?
- Why does Jesus question his relative use of the adjective “good”? (10:17‐18) Why does Jesus require the man to sell everything and give it to the poor? (10:21) How would you summarize what Jesus is saying to him? What is Jesus trying to accomplish with this man?
- How do the disciples react to Jesus’ teaching about wealth and the kingdom of God? Why do you think they react that way? In what way is Jesus’ teaching in verse 27 both humbling and encouraging?
- What does Jesus promise those who give up things for Jesus and his gospel? (10:28‐30) How will the “first” be last, and vice versa, in the Kingdom? (10:31) How do the disciples react to Jesus’ teaching about wealth and the kingdom of God? Why do you think they react that way?
