Small Group Questions
ENGAGE
- If Jesus were to ask you today the question, “What do you want me to do for you?” what would your answer be, and why?
READ
- Read or summarize the passage.
- Share any observations or questions from the passage or the sermon.
REFLECT
- Why do James and John ask to sit at Jesus’ right and left? How does it show faith? How does it show pride? How does Jesus answer them? (10:35‐41)
- “Son of David” is a Messianic title (2 Samuel 7). Bartimaeus twice addressed Jesus using this title. What does this suggest about Bartimaeus’ ability to spiritually ‘see’ Jesus as the Messiah, the promised Deliverer? In what ways does Bartimaeus show humility? How does he show self- awareness; awareness of his need for grace?
RESPOND
- What is the difference between how the world understands greatness and how people in the kingdom understand greatness?
- How was Jesus’ life an example? (10:45; Philippians 2:5‐8) How did he illustrate this at the Last Supper (John 13:4‐17) In what way did Jesus come as a ransom? (10:45; see Isaiah 53:5, 11).
- Jesus asked Bartimaeus “What do you want me to do for you?” This is the same question He asked of James and John, His disciples, in Mark 10:36. Yet, compare Jesus’s response to James and John with His ultimate response to Bartimaeus. Why might His response to, and subsequent work in, Bartimaeus have differed so significantly from His response to James and John?
PRAY
As you pray, pray for:
- Hearts that reflect Jesus’ heart of a servant.
- Eyes that see Jesus as the object of our faith and worship.
- Minds that think with sober judgment.
