James 2:1-13
No Compromise In Mercy

Sermon Questions

James 2:1-13

Reflect:

  • What command does James give in verse 1?  Why should Christians heed this command? (consider verses 4-8)
  • What are the four reasons James gives in verses 5-9 for why favoritism is a sin?
  • How does James want his readers to “speak and act” towards others? (verse 12-13)

Respond:

  • Who might the well-dressed man and the poor man be in our society today? What makes someone honored, or what makes someone discounted and overlooked?
  • Read 1 Corinthians 1:26-31
    • What kind of people did God call in the Corinthian church?
    • What point are both Paul and James (James 2:5) making?
  • Read Isaiah 52:13-53:10
    • If we show favoritism to the wealthy and impressive over the poor and unimpressive, what does that suggest we have forgotten about our Lord and Savior?
  • How will you connect God’s treatment of you in the gospel with your treatment of others in your church?

Pray:

Give thanks…

  • for God’s word, and for the freedom that comes from obeying it.
  • for God’s mercy, and for how that both comforts and humbles you.
  • for God’s care for the vulnerable.
